"The Brave Monkey Pirate" By: Hayes Roberts

      This Children's story is about a little pirate monkey who is afraid to go to the doctors for his shots. The little monkeys dad gives him a map and sends him on a brave mission. On this mission the little monkey bravely encounters scary monsters, climbs lava filled volcanos and crosses  scary seas to where he meets a "crab wizard" who gives him a rock. If this rock is squeezed and the little monkey counts to three, " he will be magically taken into the future, where the shot is finished". The little monkey was so brave that he did just that at the doctors office. Sure enough that magic rock worked. The little monkey even got some ice cream after.

      This fantasy genre tells a great creative story with a wonder lesson to be revealed in the end.  Even though some of the events in the story could never take place, such as: climbing lava filled volcanoes and meeting scary monsters, the lesson of bravery pours through the fun and imaginative thought. The illustrations in this children's book are fantastic. They portray the exact image and creative nature that is physically stated in the text. Its colorful and fun to look at.

* What do you think the little monkey  was feeling when the doctor told him he would have to come back to get shot?

 

* Do you think the little monkey was thinking when his father sent him off with a map on his fastest ship ?

 

* Do you think he was scared when he encountered all those scary obstacles?

 

*If he was scared, why do you think he didn't turn back and go home?

 

Activity:

 

Send the children on a brave mission and have them follow a hand written map. Have an obstacle course set up with arrows. Have the children climb slides, swing on swings and crawl through a playground set to where a magical "rock" of their own can be found.
